This is something i found at Happo-en, a beautiful Institute with large Japanese garden and is very popular to arrange wedding ceremony there, that explains about BONSAI. I really don't understand why they first say "it has countless admirers around the world". So we should all also admire it? WTF? The reason why i am so annoyed about it is because i saw many many similar explanation at Temples in Kyoto or even at Museums. Something like "what you are seeing now is very very rare". Leave me alone. Please try best to explain it and excite us purely about BONSAI or whatever artwork. But Bonsai here was marvelous.

One of my best food experience in Japan was Soba noodle at "TOSHI AN" in Shirogane on Gaien Nishi Dori. I think the first time I have visited there was when I was 19 years old advised by a friend TAXI kobayashi back then. Its taste didn't change a bit as well as interiors and type of people who come here to have Soba. What i like about this Soba restaurant is of course about Food (soba and Tenpura) but also its atmosphere. Going soba restaurant nowadays could be a posh thing. It could be a bit pricey too. Yes, this TOSHI AN is also not cheap, but it is worth visit. it's not too much, not too less. Just perfect for me.

I was always answering "I want to eat TARANOME TENPURA" when I was asked "what do you want to eat when you go back to Japan this time?". Here it is. A bit too early for this mountain wild plants, but right on time for me. Believe or not, this is the amount you would get for 1 dish. and it costs 8 euro or something. yes, crazy but you will understand how special it is when you eat it.
ebi-megu-22.jpg

I don't know how to describe its tastes. But for a minute i couldn't talk or react after I bite this KAKIAGE. It's really THAT good.
ebi-megu-23.jpg

Zen sometime makes Soba noodle with German ingredients. And it was unexpectedly good. But this noodle at TOSHI AN, look at it! To me it is Thelonias Monk's piano play.

Another amazing bar I went was Dry Food speciality. Bartender is also a dry food "Sommelier" that advises what fits most to which drink. The way how they cook is also kind of ceremony. Actually this bar is EXTREMELY DARK. You really don't see anything except your table that has light 40 cm above the counter. NO MUSIC. You will be drinking REALLY in the DARK. This was really a special experience for me. But if you take a closer look at interiors, you would realize they put ridiculously so much effort to the details which you don't actually see. Very conceptual. I LOVED IT. It's in Ebisu area. Quite Pricey.
ebi-megu-37.jpg

ebi-megu-38.jpg

ebi-megu-39.jpg

And i can not miss this Bar-restaurant, KIRYU, in Ebisu area. Staff are all B-Boys so you eat and drink while listening to "dont sweat the technique". What is special about this place is that you don't feel stupid even if you are alone coming here at 7 in the morning and order a big glass of draft beer because you have many others who do the same.
And food here is no joke. Soup-Curry-Rice here was another best food experience for me.
I am now trying to make similar curry at home now but very difficult. basically it was "bouillabaisse" with curry.

TOKIO 1

It is a big city where most of my friends are living, where you might jump in to a cafe and realize that it's a cafe only for dogs, where you can eat whatever kind of food at any time 24/7, where police and ambulance cars are warning not by sound but rather with lights, where many areas are not allowed to smoke on street but totally ok to smoke inside cafe or restaurants, where...where...where....hmmm, let's see.

Yamada san from Onitsuka Tiger. My first Japanese contact person from Onitsuka Tiger. I usually meet him in Europe but this time he took us around Daikanyama and Shibuya area to visit fashion stores such as white mountaineering, Tokishirazu and so on. He is a good example of being able to communicate in English without going outside of Japan. He was wearing Starstyling jacket. Respect.

Smoking booth next to Shibuya station. There are actually "smoking controller" on streets that you have to pay 1000 yen=8 euro fine as penalty if they find you smoking other than this nice and cubic smoking booth.

I don't know if this happens a lot to many people, but it does to me quite many times in my life where ever i am is that to meet somebody you know by accident on street. In this case, TAXI Kobayashi, a photographer and one of my best friend just came out from one of convinience store in Ebisu when we were about to pass it by. If we were 15 seconds too early or too late, this wouldn't happen. This shows how excited we were.

It was Svenja's 4th time visit to Japan. Three times with me, once without me. One of the reason we visited this time of the year is because of to promote her Reality Studio 2010 AW collection at her agency in Tokyo, Zeniya, who was having a showroom. It was very interesting to meet their customers directly and hear what they think about her collection. One big findings were that many customers buy Reality Studio not only as women apparel but for men as well. Reality Studio is going to Unisex direction without her real intention which is really cool and very welcome.

To come to this kind of restaurant in that kind of time means they are quite flexible time people. Game soft programmers, Bar owners, musicians, I don't know exactly. One of the most interesting person we have seen was a guy who looked like a Ibiza veteran who now came back home to Tokyo and works as a legendary Karaoke master type. His outlook was complete white, starting from white straw hat, mohair material white short sleeve T shirts, white flared trousers and white wingtip shoes with a small white boston bag. He looked like 65 years old but he is maybe only 40 who took whatever he can when he was young. i don't know.

Of course nice book stores open till very late or 24 hours. We found Maiami from Berlin new sweater collection already being used for styling on this magazine. This was shown at Paris just only a months ago.

We told him selecting photos is also part of very important work. The very first theme we gave to him was "Spring". We are really looking forward to what he would send to us.

It is now 6 in the morning, totally jetlag after coming back from 3 weeks travel in Japan. I need for sure some more time to think it over and digest how it was and what it meant to me. But I try my best to write my first impression how it was. Here it goes.....

Of course it was a massive FUN TIME! Starting already at 11AM to go around Harajuku, Aoyama, Daikanyama area to check all the mouth watering stores and brands you can imagine after drinking with my old friends till 8AM at a bar in Ebisu where Japanese B-boys are running the bar, serving the best curry rice i have ever had in my life, playing the latest Japanese Hip Hop LOUD.

or

Staying at a traditional tatami floored room called "Akira Kurosawa" because it was his room for 15 years when he was staying in Kyoto until the age of 85, and listening from the owners how he was (basically he was a descent drinker&smoker&talker) and how it was when he had a brain attack in the room and was brought to hospital. As a result he died 3 years later at age 88 (not in this room).

or

Getting a permission from my small nephew who is 9 years old to read his first love-letter from a girl that he got on the day. In return, I was showing to him my first love-letter too which i found in the old drawers but i was told by him "i don't approve it as a love letter" because the direct words "i like you" didn't appear in it. He was very strict about that.

But at the same time, staying in Japan as a Japanese who is living outside of Japan is always a period that requires extra care how to say things when i find something funny or strange or uncomfortable in the Japanese way of life. i want to say it in a way that my family or my friends or people around me don't take it as offensive opinions but as motivation when i want to talk about ideas or alternative ways of thinking, living, surviving in life in general.

I have lots of concerns about, for example, my big nephew who is 16 years old, or the Japanese young generation in general, how he or they see their life. They see it as if the goal of life is to get rich as quick and easy as possible. Being stuck in his small world watching instead of experiencing and taking initiative and responsibility of their own life.

It could be a big topic and discussion that I want to avoid now, but i feel always the same that in Japan, there are really less opportunities to hear and see examples of other ideas and way of life from somebody next to you. Why? that's the biggest question why it is like that. Is it coming from Japanese educational system that teaches to enter a good company is the goal of stable life so that it is THE happy life? or Japanese mentality that self restrict not to be "different" from others?

For me it was only possible to get other examples of life because i was able to communicate with foreigners in English. I was really interested in living in United States of America from an early age of my life at around 14. And I did it at 16. English was very important tool for me to get other ideas.

One thing I was so amazed during our stay in Japan was the number of tourists from all over the world going to Comme des Garcon shop in Aoyama or incense shop in Kyoto city that has more than 350 years of history. It is soooo much more than what I know from 10 years ago. It is not comparable. But shop staff that i have seen still can not communicate in English. Very very primitive level. I would imagine it would make so much sense if Japanese government organize special English course only for people who work at fashion stores in Harajuku, or electric products stores in Akihabara, bars in Aoyama, Temples at Kyoto. ENGLISH. that's what i see as a big hope in Japan. And it is fun! ENGLISH YO!

So that is my first impression of my three weeks stay in Japan. Logical but illogical. Practical but unpractical, Beauty but ugly, extremely quiet but unbearably noisy. Open but closed. The land of contradiction. I also have this love-hate relationship with my home country. That's one of the big reason it took more than 3 years to go back there again.
Japan travel here we come.

jp-1-1.jpg
